Upper Pecos Watershed Association
The Upper Pecos Watershed Association was formed in 2006 to address concerns over the quality and quantity of water in the upper Pecos River, above I-25.
Trout Unlimited has been a strong supporter of the development of this organization, as the Pecos represents one of the great water resources in our state. It is our belief that the Pecos offers one of the few opportunities to restore a large population of Rio Grande cutthroat trout.
The Truchas Chapter of TU has been an ongoing sponsor of two river clean-ups each year. UPWA has also been instrumental in dealing with the camping complex in the Pecos Canyon, and in pushing the state to institute a state park to deal with the problem.
Ultimately, TU would like to see a concerted effort to restore and protect the Rio Grande cutthroats in the upper watershed. Recently, the Pecos River was dealt a blow with the appearance of Didymo, or Rock Snot in the upper river. This is another problem that will have to be dealt with as we work to protect one of New Mexico’s best water resources.
