Protect

McCrystal3sProtecting our native fisheries is our highest priority in New Mexico because of the tenuous status of both the Rio Grande cutthroat and the Gila trout.  More money is available to work on native fish, which helps NMTU to get work done on the ground.  With the Endangered Species Act status of these fish, we feel is imperative that we get as much native fish work done as possible. If we do not, we may lose streams to fish in.

This does not mean that NMTU works solely on native trout.  We also have an interest in protecting all our cold water fisheries and we have done work to protect fisheries such as the San Juan, Pecos, and Red River.  Working on water flows, habitat, and insuring our continued access to fishing throughout New Mexico.

See the sub-pages under Protect to see what we are doing to help the plight on the Rio Grande cutthroat and the Gila trout.  Over the past several years, we’ve been able to start work on several projects that should help these fish.
